Book Signing Tour

Thursday, May 22nd 2008 @ 3:51 AM    post viewed 541 times

Dressed in my Navajo regalia, with turquoise jewelry and traditional shawl standing before the crowd, I have to admit I WAS EXCITED!  My book, "Finding Helen - A Navajo Miracle," is out (can purchase via Amazon.com).  I had two book signings in SLC, Utah area and sold over 300 books in 2 days in two locations.  One corporation purchased 90 books and by the time I had completed the 300 books signed my hand was cramped... not really but it was stiff.  My friends came, some of my family came, and some new friends I made due to the events.  Whew!

I had to laugh as I went on two radio stations, one local and one National Public Radio where the host station interviewed me by phone from NY, NY... he actually knew where the Navajo-Hopi Indian Reservation was; and asked about a small Hopi Restaurant.  The whole process was delightfully refreshing as I'm so new at this.

Now I'm touring the southeastern area, Alabama, Tenn., Georgia.  I'm speaking at District 77 conference, and the Region VIII Luncheon Speaker; doing two genealogy workshops in Florence, Alabama, and just completed 4-days of storytelling at the Moulton, AL Indian Gathering (35,000 attendees)... wholla!  My publisher, Bluewater Publishing Company, in Killen Alabama has been most wonderful!  They are sending me out now to do book signings at various bookstores and schools, etc.  When I return to home June 30th then I come back in Sept... then to Arizona, New Mexico, Utah in November.

I would like some interaction as I'm a newbie on being an author.  Any ideas?  Do I carry a bag full of books with me everywhere I go?  I have to admit going blind hasn't stopped me but I do need assistance getting around since I don't drive. I'm traveling with two-suitcases and moving about fast... HELP! The heat is getting to me and I'm finding naps are good.  The last time I visited here I gained ten pounds as the food is so good!

Please, I would love to hear from other authors how they did their book signing tours!

Congratulations on your success with this book!  I did the book tour a few years back.  But I did it locally, that is, I pinpointed a 60 mile radius from my home.  I did about 30 bookstores in a few months.  I think my record sales was 10 books in one night, so you are doing fantastic!

The bookstores pre ordered my books, so I did not have to lug them around with me, but I always carry a case of books in my trunk.

As for the food, don't worry about gaining weight.  Doing the kind of touring you are doing, you are bound to lose several pounds! (Next book perhaps? "How I shed the pounds signing books!" by Rose Johnson)

Looking back: that book tour I did was extremely helpful to the success of my book.  It pushed my retail sales level to the point where Barnes and Noble accepted my book as stock book!  For the last several years I have been just sitting back and collecting monthly checks.  Ahhh the American dream :)

Congrats Rosie!!

That is most impressive! I can;t wait to BLOG about being a published author too!  I had some of my poetry published - One in particular I want to create into a children;s book. Good luck on your book tour - enjoy it. I got your post card in the mail of your book!!

Bo - That was one of my questions that I didn;t get to ask during the Author's Panel Session at the D53 Conference in Holyoke, MASS on Saturday May 17, 2008 - if any of you had done book tours at libraries, book stores and other places.  I thought it was interesting to note that since you all of you published your books on your own - that the major books stores don;t carry your books - unless there is a high demand and request - {GOOD TO NOTE for authors - get people to request the book!}

This holiday 2008 season I will be a contributing writer in a book called UNSUNG NEIGHBORS  - a book that Charlotte Endorf is writing about all the interesting people she has met along her travels.  I will be able to sell this book as well. http://www.outskirtspress.com/plainsbound

I admire your writers and authors and more importantly that you are making your dreams writing and publishing dreams come true!

KEEP WRITING !!
